Stinky Is Good In A Garden Of Lies

Dayna emerged from the steam-filled bathroom. She’d raced upstairs so she could beat Xavier to the newer bathroom, where she tried her best to scrub all of the filth the day had brought. It felt so good to be home. She slipped into an old pair of shorts and ratty tee shirt and headed downstairs. Maybe she and Xavier could sit in front of the television and watch a ridiculously stupid comedy and gorge themselves on junk food. They’d earned it. She made her way downstairs expecting to find Xavier already waiting for her. But the house was quiet; too quiet.
“Xav?” she walked to the other side of the house and found the bathroom empty.
Sitting on the kitchen counter was the note: Sorry honey. Needed at station. Be back soon. Love you. Xav.
She crushed the note in her hand and threw it across the room. She didn’t know what came over her. Anger? Sadness? Loneliness? Whatever it was, she stood against the counter trying to fight back tears. Dayna could see the sun disappearing into the clouds. Her morning and afternoon were gone. And now she was forced to spend her evening alone. Not to mention the outcome of the day’s work. With the box being in Mrs. Landau’s possession, she wished she had stayed in bed. But the damage had been done. She slipped on her sandals and grabbed her keys. If she was going to get that box back, she’d need a pint of something chocolatey to help her devise a master plan.
